China builds world’s longest bridge over water

The new Qingdao Haiwan Bridge in Jiaozhou Bay connecting Qingdao and Huangdao cost $8 billion.

At 26.4 miles long (42.5 km) and a cost of $8 billion, China has just finished constructing the world’s longest bridge over water.

Built in Jiaozhou Bay connecting the cities of Qingdao and Huangdao, Qingdao Haiwan bridge takes the title of world’s longest bridge over water from the previous record-holder, the U.S.’s Lake Pontchartarain Causeway in Louisiana, which is about 23 miles long.

To successfully link the two cities by the bridge, China mobilized 10,000 workers for four years at a cost of $8 billion to complete the project.

About 30,000 cars per day are expected to travel the new 6-lane structure. There are longer bridges in the world, however some travel over land, unlike the Qingdao Haiwan Bridge.

Drivers would be wise to check their gas tanks before setting out on the bridge because the next service station could be a fair distance – especially if you’re on foot.
