New $3.9 billion casino hotel-casino opens in Las Vegas

The Cosmopolitan opens this month in the U.S. gambling mecca.

Although it was one of the hardest hit cities in terms of 2008’s economic crisis, Las Vegas has just opened a new hotel-casino on the Strip.

Construction on The Cosmopolitan was already well underway when the housing market collapsed during the crisis. At the time, the landlord, Deutsche Bank, undertook to complete the project, and then asked the former director of Caesars Palace, John Unwin, to manage it.

Featuring a 100,000 square foot casino, the new 52-storey building has 2,000 rooms available during its opening last week, and is still constructing another 1,000 rooms for the end of 2011.

The arrival of the Cosmopolitan on the scene in Las Vegas brings the number of available hotel rooms in the gambling capital to approximately 150,000.

With the hopes of attracting a different kind of Las Vegas visitor, notably New Yorkers, management has especially brought in several trendy restaurants to help infuse the hotel with a character that is distinct from other resorts, and hopefully attract a more intellectual clientele.

The Cosmopolitan is located right next to the Bellagio on the Strip.
