James Cameron joins the circus

Famous Canadian director is producer on Cirque du Soleil 3-D feature film.

Canadian director James Cameron, 56, is one of the producers of a Cirque du Soleil 3-D feature film. Cirque co-founder Guy Laliberté and Cameron met in October to discuss the project.

While Cirque du Soleil is about to make an official announcement soon, Deadline has leaked that the Avatar director and his team have already traveled to Las Vegas to film Cirque du Soleil performances in 3-D.

The as-yet-untitled family film will be produced by Cameron and directed by Andrew Adamson (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia). The film will combine narrative storytelling interspersed with a dreamlike Cirque world, where the film’s lead character is transported.

Almost one third of the filming is completed. One of the acrobats from the show KÀ Cirque du Soleil, Igor Zaripov, mentioned on his Facebook page that he was involved in the filming.

Primarily financed by Cirque du Soleil, film producers include James Camera, Reel FX Entertainment, and Strange Weather Films. Ultimately, the intention is to launch a series of 3-D family features that incorporate the magical world of Cirque du Soleil.

Cameron is currently at work directing Avatar 2 and 3, which are due for release in 2014 and 2015.
