Fashion magazine readers obsessed with body image

Majority of Glamour readers admit they’re obsessed with their weight.

Fifty-four percent of respondents admit to being obsessed with their body shape and size according to an online survey at glamour.com commissioned by the Condé Nast publishing group.

Those surveyed reported dissatisfaction with the sort of "gimmick" diets published in magazines and instead were looking for advice on healthy lifestyle changes that work in everyday life.

The obsession with appearance goes beyond body weight with 79 percent of readers saying that they like to make frequent changes to their style and appearance. They often surf the web to find new looks and accessories, and the same large percentage had made an online purchase within the past month.

Nine hundred women aged 18-35 were surveyed earlier in the year, and the results were released publicly on December 2.  Comfortable using technology, 84 percent of respondents belong to social networking site Facebook, and 60 percent say that they could not go more than a day without their cell phone.

Glamour first began conducting these types of polls in 1984 in a groundbreaking body image survey. The findings of this initial survey were even more shocking: a full 75 percent responded that they considered themselves "too fat".
