Britain’s Tate Museum undergoes $70 million reno

Next Feburary nine galleries will be completely renovated.

Britain’s famous Tate Gallery is slated to undergo major renovations this coming February, reports Reuters.

Home to some of Britain’s most important artwork, upwards of $70 million will be spent on new walls, roofs, floors, and foyer for nine galleries in the oldest part of the building, which dates back to the 19th century.

Under the plans, a domed atrium at the gallery’s entrance will grant visitors access to the upper level of the building – for the first time since 1927.

The number of visitors to the Tate Britain has increased 60 per cent in the last decade, and a new café and learning studios are being added to meet the demand. Renovations are expected to be completed by 2013.

Tate Britain display selections from the Tate Collection, most notably artwork by JMW Turner, John Constable and William Blake.
