Eating oily fish helps prevent blindness

Omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish helps protect the cells of the retina.

Scientific researchers have discovered that a diet rich in oily fish like salmon, mackerel and fresh tuna, may help protect against age-related macular degeneration – the most common form of sight loss among older people, reports the Daily Mail.

The omega-3 content in these fish helps prevent the death of retinal cells that typically occurs in macular degeneration. There is currently no cure for this condition that gradually causes sufferers to lose their central vision, meaning they can no longer see what is directly in front of them, making activities like reading, writing, driving and watching television almost impossible.

American scientists surveyed 2,400 people aged 65 to 84 about their eating habits, according to the results published in the Ophthalmology journal, and discovered that participants who ate oily fish at least twice a week were less likely to develop macular degeneration.

Research has also shown that omega-3 fatty acids help cut many health risks, from prostate and skin cancer to heart disease and high blood pressure.
