Queen of Soul in talks for a role in film adaptation of Broadway musical.

Singer Mary J. Blige, 39, is in talks to star in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, reports Variety.

The popular musical takes place in a club called Rock of Ages on Sunset Strip, and features 1980s hit songs from Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi and Pat Benatar. It tells the story of a couple who meet, fall in love, and try to stay together while living a rock n’ roll lifestyle.

Adam Shankman (Hairspray) will direct and choreograph the film, and the playwright, Chris D’Arienzo, will handle the script. The musical premiered in 2006 in Los Angeles, and on Broadway in 2009. Tom Cruise’s name has also come up in discussions for a couple of roles.

Blige has recorded nine albums in her career, eight of which were certified multi-platinum. In 2009, she had a role and sang the title track in Tyler Perry’s film I Can Do Bad All By Myself.
