Burgundy caves home to unique underground Christmas market

Annual Christmas market held in underground caves offers unique Burgundy treats.

Each December, the caves of Bailly, an old quarry in the Burgundy region, undergo a holiday transformation in order to host the only underground Christmas market in France.

The former quarry has found new life as Les Caves de Bailly, home to millions of bottles of Cremant de Bourgogne, award-winning sparkling white and red wines that are the pride of the region.

For Christmas, the natural wine cellar plays host to dozens of local producers who set up booths for a unique Christmas market that attracts tourists and locals looking for fine products to impress their holiday guests.

Visitors can sample, order, or take home products from the Burgundy region including foie gras, specialty breads, snails, poultry, cheeses, trout, oysters, honey, as well as crafts by local artisans including jewelry, lamps, wooden toys, pottery, blacksmithing, and stained glass.

New this year, a catering division will offer visitors sample local dishes accompanied by wines from the cellar. In addition, a youth center will allow children to participate in several fun events and educational activities.

The Christmas market is a free event that opens its doors for just a few days – on December 18 and 19, and December 23 and 24.
