Yangon Airways suspends flights

Burmese airline stalled by license renewal issues.

Tourists who booked a domestic flight with Yangon Airways in Myanmar, Burma, will have to find a replacement quickly, since the airline’s planes will be grounded as of December 3 while the company struggles to get their licence renewed by the military government.

One of four private airlines in Myanmar, Yangon Airways announced it was suspending operations because the country’s aviation authorities would not renew its certification.

According to Myanmar’s Civil Aviation Authority, the certificate was not issued because the airline did not have required documents from the Myanmar Investment Commission. The current owner of the airline is linked to a separatist army accused of being a drug cartel.

"It’s nothing to do with the airworthiness of the aircraft, they’re absolutely perfect. We think it is something involving its policies," said an official, who requested anonymity.

The airline specializes in domestic flights and serves major attractions in the country. They promise to help clients find other flights with competitors until the situation is resolved.
