Turmeric in curry spice may help liver health

Turmeric may help prevent a common yet serious liver disease.

Researchers at the University of St. Louis have discovered that the bright yellow spice, turmeric, used in curry can help prevent a common yet very fatty liver disease called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Often the result of obesity and weight gain, this liver disease affects up to 4 per cent of U.S. adults.

A new study, published in the journal Endocrinology, reveals that turmeric has shown very promising results when it comes to liver health. However, more research is needed before a turmeric-based treatment can be devised.

Traditional Asian medicine has used turmeric as a healing aid for a long time, and it is believed to help with gastrointestinal problems, arthritis, and lack of energy.

Recently, other studies have proven it to be a good anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Other proponents of the spice say it also has anti-aging properties and helps protect against cirrhosis, Alzheimer’s and cancer.
