Underground museum opens in Krakow

Archaeological finds now on public display in underground museum.

One of the oldest cities in Poland is home to a unique new underground museum set to open tomorrow (October 1) in the Main Market Square of Krakow.

The new museum is located 4 meters (20 feet) under the pavement of the Market Square in the historic heart of the city,

Built over the course of five years, the museum centres around an archaeological dig exploring 800 years of history. Visitors can view more than 700 original artefacts, from English lead weights used for trade to Tatar arrowheads. Visitors can learn more at 30 multimedia kiosks that describe Krakow’s history.

For history buffs, museum landmarks include a glass-bottomed footbridge that lets visitors see elements of medieval architecture and paving below them. The remains of a medieval cottage and a cemetery will also be on display.
