Paying tribute to a legend

A special tribute concert to John Lennon will go down in New York City.

Former Beatle John Lennon would be turning 70 on October 9 if he had not been fatally gunned down in NYC in December 1980. He will be honoured on his birthday in the city where he drew his last breath.

Patti Smith, Cindy Lauper, Jackson Browne, Shelby Lynne and Aimee Mann have already signed on to perform at a tribute concert in Lennon’s memory. More big names are expected to be added and all proceeds will go to the Playing for Change Foundation. That’s a charity that promotes peace with music.

This concert joins an ever-growing series of events planned around the world to mark John Lennon’s birthday. It takes place at the Beacon Theatre on November 12.

Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, will be in Iceland on his birthday at the Imagine Peace Tower, an outdoor art installation she designed and dedicated to her husband in 2007.

Ono will also rerelease eight of John Lennon’s solo albums and will offer fans a new collection of his work.
