Canned food affects male fertility

Chemicals found in food tins could reduce male fertility.

A new study points the finger at Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical found in canned food. Some countries have already banned its use in baby bottles and other children’s products. Now there is a report this chemical is also dangerous for men.

A new study published in the journal Reproductive Toxicology found that BPA affects male fertility. BPA is currently used to make plastic and is found in CD cases, plastic knives and forks and also in canned food and drinks.

Men who have a high rate of BPA in their body are more likely to have a lower sperm count. The study revealed that men with the highest rate of BPA had a 23% lower concentration of sperm.

Professor John Meeker led the study at the University of Michigan. He commented: The results also suggested a 10 per cent increase in sperm DNA damage."

It is already known that BPA limits the estrogen rate in women which could be linked to breast cancer, liver damage, obesity, diabetes as well as infertility problems.

Further research is needed because authorities claim there is not enough evidence to conclude that BPA is harmful to human health.
