Poutine – our national food?

Poutine is named the national dish of Canada.

French fries, cheese curds and gravy, this traditional poutine dish best represents Canadians.

Or, at least it does according to a survey conducted by The Globe and Mail on Facebook.

Fifty-three percent of Canadians say poutine is the dish that is most symbolic of their country. Montreal bagels came in second place. These are two dishes that even the stars cannot seem to resist.

During his recent visit to Montreal, Brendan Fraser said he always takes time out to eat a poutine. Actor Rob Schneider is known for having a real weak spot for Montreal bagels.

Many Canadians who live in the United States and own a restaurant have even added poutine to their menu.

Ketchup chips ranked fifth with 7% of the votes.

The beaver retains its title as the animal that best represents Canada, beating out Canadian geese and polar bears.

The maple leaf on the flag is not going anywhere either; the maple tree represents the ultimate tree for Canadians.

When it comes to clothing, poll respondents thought the tuque is most symbolic of Canada. Regarding a national sports team, the 1972 Canadian team that defeated Russia in the "series of the century" was voted number one. The Montreal Canadiens ranked second.
