Portishead gets artistic freedom clause

The British group promises fans won’t have to wait long this time.

Portishead rose to fame in the 1990s with the albums Dummy (1994) and Portishead (1997). Their third studio album didn’t arrive until almost 10 years later. Third was released in 2008.

The trip hop band stays out of the spotlight but keeps working on new music.

Geoff Barrow told BBC 6 Music that fans won’t have to wait that long for a new album. He revealed: "I’m writing for Portishead throughout July and August and I want to bang on and get another record out. Hopefully it’ll be an awful lot quicker because we’re all older and wiser."

Barrow told the BBC host that the record label has given the band the artistic freedom it needs to make music on their terms. He explained: "They’ve said that we can do what we want. We sell enough records to keep them happy."

The band also teamed up with Amnesty International this year. Fans can download the charity single Chasing the Tear on iTunes and all proceeds go to that organization’s human rights work.
