Music was her saving grace

Alicia Keys says that music kept her from going down the wrong path.

She has sold 30 million albums worldwide. She has number one singles to her credit like Fallin’ and No One, four number one albums and numerous awards. And it all may never have happened…

Alicia Keys grew up in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City. She says she avoided the pitfalls of gang life thanks to music and her family.

The 29-year old singer shares her story: "When I was about 13 or 14, I was in the street when someone got shot in a gang situation. What was difficult was that in my group of friends, some went the way of gangs and drugs and others didn’t."

Keys is now engaged to be married to producer Swizz Beatz, 31. She is also five months pregnant with their first child. The couple decided to wait until the baby arrives to find out if it is a boy or a girl.

She recently appeared at the BET Awards and accepted two gongs to add to her collection, one for Best Female R&B Artist and another for Best Collaboration for Empire State Of Mind with Jay-Z
