85% of drinks for children contain too much lead

A majority of children’s drinks contain an alarming amount of lead.

The Environmental Law Foundation tested 400 samples of 150 children’s products, including organic and traditional fruit juices. Of 146 contaminated products, 125 contained enough lead to require a warning label as stated in Proposition 65 in the United States.

In addition to apple juice and grape juice, the foundation also tested fruit, pear and peach cocktails and some baby foods.

The Foundation sent notices to those responsible for enforcing the law, as well as manufacturers, distributors and retailers asking them to comply with Proposition 65 and put a clear warning on every package of products that are contaminated with lead.

Excessive exposure to lead can cause anemia, hearing damage, behavioural and learning problems as well as several other health problems in children.
