Yogurt protects kids against cavities

Yogurt offers good protection against cavities.

Eating a lot of yogurt reduces the risk of dental cavities in children, says a Japanese study published in the Journal of Dentistry.

Eating dairy products at least four times a week reduces the chances of tooth decay by 22% among children aged three years, compared to those who eat only once a week.

The study shows that dairy products hold back the development of cavities in children. Butter, cheese and milk offer little benefit, but regular consumption of yogurt gives good protection.

It is not clear why but researchers believe that yogurt contains proteins that bind to the tooth surface and thus protect against acids which usually attack the tooth enamel.

Do not choose yogurt that contains added sugar because sugar promotes tooth decay. Instead choose the natural taste of low-fat yogurt for your children.
