Radiohead drummer goes solo

Drummer Phil Selway does his own thing just like frontman Thom Yorke.

Phil Selway is known for his work on percussion and drums in one of the most respected bands in the world, Radiohead. He now announces the upcoming release of a solo album where he trades in the drums to play guitar and sing.

Selway plans to release Familial on August 30. He recorded this new solo album with the help of several musicians who participated in the 7 Worlds Collide project in New Zealand. The drummer provided one song, The Sun Came Out, for the double album which raise money for Oxfam. The song will appear on his new album too.

Some musicians who participated on the album include singer Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, formerly of Soul Coughing, and two members of the group Wilco, drummer Glenn Kotche and multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone.

A spokesperson from the Bella Union record label, with whom Selway signed, described the album as a collection of sublimely delicate songs that are haunting and very sincere.

Selway and the rest of Radiohead are also working on the follow up to In Rainbows which came out in 2007. The group has said they no longer want to record complete albums, preferring instead to release songs one at a time as they become ready.
