Canada lowers travel warning to Thailand

The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs lowers its travel alert to Thailand by two notches.

Thailand has been hit hard by rioting over the last several months. The attack last week by the Thai military on anti-government protesters occupying a section of downtown Bangkok has finally reduced tensions in the capital and in several locations across the country.

The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lowered its alert level, which just last week was at its highest, ie. avoid all travel to Thailand.

There are four warning levels used by the Canadian government in these circumstances. The lowest level is "Exercise normal security precautions", second is "Exercise high degree of precaution", third is "Avoid non-essential travel" and the fourth and highest level is "Avoid all travel".

The Canadian government now recommends visitors exercise a high degree of caution.

There are still some regional warnings in effect, however. Travellers are advised to continue to avoid the area of Preah Vihear and the provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala and Songkhla in the south, where the danger is still present.
