Since the beginning of American Idol‘s ninth season, nearly everyone’s attention has been focused on Crystal Bowersox. This young, 24-year old mother with a huge sun tattoo on her back and some Rasta dreads possesses a unique talent. Her voice is raspy and warm and made her a fan favourite throughout the competition.
Yesterday, a multitude of big names in music performed on the Idol stage during the finale. There was Janet Jackson, Alice Cooper, a surprise visit from Brett Michaels, Joe Cocker, two members of the Bee Gees, Christina Aguilera and Alanis Morrissette.
Then host Ryan Seacrest announced the winner’s name in the final minutes of the show. Lee DeWyze was crowned the American Idol, beating out Crystal Bowersox who everyone thought would win. She gave the better performances during her last turns at the mic.
DeWyze repeated the trend of the last few years on the show. Last year, Adam Lambert was the odds-on winner but watched the top prize go to Kris Allen. The year before, David Archuleta appeared to be coasting to victory but David Cook swept the title in the end.
Lee DeWyze has seen his life turned upside down. The former Chicago-area paint store employee now has a foothold in the music business.
Last night was also a chance to say good-bye to the judge people love to hate, Simon Cowell. He is leaving after nine years on the show.
