London’s legendary red buses go green

New buses in London will be more efficient and modern.

Each new evolution of London’s famous red buses brings a bit more modernity to this travelling monument. It’s as identifiable with the British capital as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris.

London Mayor Boris Johnson made a presentation this week of what the new version will look like in 2012. A quick glance reveals the vehicle has now fully entered the 21st century.

Much more rounded and aerodynamic, the new buses use hybrid technology, making them two times less polluting than normal. The double decker feature is retained which differentiates London from the rest of the world. In addition, the bus will have much air circulation for those taking a long journey through the city. The bus will also open a platform in the back when the weather is mild to allow passengers to hop on and off quickly.

Mayor Johnson commented: "This iconic new part of our transport system is not only beautiful, but also has a green heart beating beneath its stylish, swooshing exterior. It will cut emissions, and give Londoners a bus they can be proud of, complete with cutting edge design, and the freedom of an open platform. I expect to have hundreds of these on London’s roads, and for cities around the globe to be beside themselves with envy for our stunning red emblem of 21st century London."

London’s older double deckers are still active on some of the oldest routes to the delight of tourists.
