New recommendations to get kids moving

A quarter of parents do not know the level of physical activity recommended for their kids.

27% of parents do not know the recommended level of daily physical activity for their children, according to a study released by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and ParticipACTION which provides the new recommendations.

Up until now, it was recommended that children get 90 minutes of physical activity per day. Now, it recommends at least 60 minutes for 5-17 year olds at a moderate pace.

The president and CEO of ParticipACTION, Kelly Murumets, said: "But ultimately, we would have them do 90 minutes a day or even more active."

The new study says that even 30 or 60 minutes each day can be beneficial for children, especially as young people are now becoming more sedentary.

Healthy Kids Canada said recently that children were dangerously inactive and only 12% of them across the country were getting the recommended level of activity.

Parents can set a good example and lead the way as new recommendations for adults say they need at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week.
