Chemotherapy is highly recommended for stomach cancer

Postoperative chemotherapy significantly increases the chances of survival after stomach cancer.

Chemotherapy after surgery greatly reduces the mortality rate for stomach cancer patients.

Researchers strongly recommend that patients being operated on for this type of cancer then receive chemotherapy to increase their chances of survival. Chemotherapy reduces the risk of mortality by 18% compared with surgery alone.

Moreover, the survival rate five years later without a recurrence increases to 55.3% with chemotherapy after surgery to treat stomach cancer. This was revealed in a new study published in the journal JAMA. Researchers analyzed the records of 3,700 people with stomach cancer.

They compared data on surgery followed by chemotherapy and surgery alone. They clearly found that it is preferable to have chemotherapy after going under the knife, as this increases the chances of survival without a recurrence.
