New York wants to quiet down those guided tours

The city will force open tour buses to replace their open speakers with headphones.

Repeated complaints from New York City residents about open buses that offer guided tours are finally getting some results. People complain about loud tour guides on those buses who offer commentary as the bus rolls along.

Mayor Bloomberg is not usually very proactive in dealing with citizens’ complaints. He found that those complaints about repetitive noise were founded and will soon sign a new law to regulate the situation.

Residents of some typical NYC neighbourhoods who are on the sightseeing route around the city could no longer stand to hear guides constantly repeating the same sentences when they passed by. Many of them preferred to keep their windows closed than have to constantly listen to the noise coming out of speakers at a high decibel levels.

The new regulation requires city tour operators to equip buses with open tops with a wireless system. Tourists will have to wear headphones to hear the guide’s description.

Changes come into effect on July 2011 and all buses have to be refitted within four years, by July 2015.
