Weezer may follow in Radiohead’s footsteps

The group parts ways with its record label but it may not be the end.

Certainly a group of Radiohead’s calibre can decide not to renew their record deal, like Radiohead did with EMI in 2007, and distribute future albums themselves, like Radiohead did with In Rainbows.

Weezer is thinking about choosing the same path as the Oxford quintet. They left their record label and are thinking about promoting and distributing their next release themselves.

The band has been with Geffen Records since they burst on the scene in 1994 with the release of the first of three eponymous albums, now known as the Blue Album. This debut album was produced by Cars singer Ric Ocasek.

Weezer’s departure from Geffen has not been officially announced but bassist Scott Shriner did nothing to quell the rumours. He told Billboard magazine, "We’re always planning and scheming something… We’re always working on some new music. I can’t really go into any detail about that yet, but we’re all writing and working on new stuff."

A rep for Weezer said the band has fulfilled their contract with Geffen and are negotiating a possible new contract with the record label.
