Do you suffer from tanorexia?

A third of indoor tanning booths are addicted to the fake bake.

Have you heard of tanorexia? It’s a dependence on UV rays, and it is compared to being hooked on booze, drugs or cigarettes.

Researchers in psychiatry and psychology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the University of Albany, State University of New York, followed 421 college undergraduates.

Dr. Catherine Mosher co-authored the study. She describes indoor tanning as a self-destructive behaviour, since it has been proven that it is as harmful to the skin as regular exposure to the sun.

The study found that a third of tanning bed users develop this type of addiction. The study was published Monday (April 19) in the journal Archives of Dermatology.

Dr. Mosher says, "Both tanning indoors and the use of substances are thought of as a way to regulate emotions, or cope with distressing emotions."

Indoor tanning not only helps you maintain a bronzed look year round, it also allows you to relax.

Dr. Mosher adds: "Despite ongoing efforts to educate the public about the health risks associated with natural and non-solar UV radiation, recreational tanning continues to increase among young adults."
