Kirsten Dunst signs on to the next Lars von Trier flick

Kirsten Dunst will star in the next Lars von Trier film, Melancholia.

With the new Spider-Man going ahead without her, Kirsten Dunst is being offered other projects. Deadline New York reports that she is set to star in Melancholia, the next project by director Lars von Trier (Antichrist, Dancer in the Dark).

It will be the director’s first sci-fi film. Few details about the script are available at the moment.

Here’s what we do know: Dunst will star alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård and Udo Kier.

Penelope Cruz was offered the role first but she turned it down to play Blackbeard’s daughter in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Melancholia will film from July to September in the south of Sweden.

Kirsten Dunst is presently finishing work on Upside Down with Jim Sturgess in Montreal. No release date has been confirmed for the film All Good Things, a drama in which she stars with Ryan Gosling.
