Tom Hanks is interested in Green Day

Tom Hanks wants to produce the film version of Green Day’s musical American Idiot.

MTV News is reporting that actor Tom Hanks wants to produce the film version of Green Day’s musical American Idiot.

Hanks and his partner Gary Goetzman are in talks to have their production company acquire the film rights. Nothing is official yet.

Tom Hanks has already produced a musical for the big screen. He was behind one of the monster successes of 2008, the ABBA-themed Mamma Mia!  The film starred Amanda Seyfriend and Meryl Streep and grossed more than $600 million worldwide.

The American Idiot musical is based on Green Day’s album of the same name that came out in 2004. Singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong co-wrote the songbook for the musical with Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening).

American Idiot opens on Broadway on April 20th. Preview performances begin this week at Manhattan’s St James Theatre.

Tom Hanks is back as the voice of Woody in Toy Story 3 coming out on June 18. In April, he will shoot the drama Larry Crowne with Julia Roberts. He will also be reprising his role as Professor Robert Langdon in The Lost Symbol that is currently in development.
