The benefits of eating dinner as a family

Regular family mealtimes can help reduce anxiety and asthma in children.

The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry says eating dinner as a family can improve a child’s health.

A study was done by a team led by Barbara Fiese, a University of Illinois professor of human and community development and director of the university’s Family Resiliency Center. It showed that asthma and anxiety (which are connected) can be reduced if parents take the time to eat dinner with their kids.

The healthy interaction that takes place during family meals or time spent together can improve a child’s wellbeing.

Fiese says, "It makes sense that children who have difficulty breathing might be anxious and prefer to keep their parents, who can help them in an emergency, close by."

The professor goes on to say, "In this study, we identified one important practice that makes a difference. Supportive interaction during family mealtimes helps increase a child’s sense of security and eases separation anxiety symptoms. And, when children are less anxious, their lung function improves."
