C-section increases risk of juvenile diabetes

Being born via C-section can increase your chance of getting juvenile diabetes.

Apparently, babies born by caesarean have a higher risk of developing juvenile diabetes during childhood. This is the result of a British study by a team at Queen’s University Belfast.

The scientists analyzed 20 studies from 16 countries totalling one million children. 10,000 of the children followed were diabetic.

Babies born by C-section have a 20% higher chance of developing diabetes than those born the natural way.

The reason for this phenomenon is unknown but researchers believe there is a factor that increases not only one’s risk of suffering from Type 1 diabetes,  but that also increases the chances of being born by C-section.

Irish researchers hypothesize that newborns born via C-section are more exposed to the hospital environment which can affect their immune system.

A lot of studies have been done about birth by C-section. There’s also been a link established between caesareans and the risk of suffering from asthma.

Women do put their own heath at risk when they give birth by C-section. Specialists believe a caesarean birth should only be done in cases of medical necessity.
