Celebrating Ray Charles

A musical comedy about Ray Charles will premiere on the Great White Way this fall.

According to Billboard, a new musical comedy celebrating Ray Charles called Unchain My Heart is coming to Broadway. It opens November 7 but preview performances begin on October 8.

Producer Stuart Benjamin said the show will be accompanied by a book written by author Suzan-Lori Parks. The musical comedy will be directed by Sheldon Epps. The cast will be announced soon.

Benjamin worked with the late singer for 15 years. He produced the hit movie Ray based on the life of Ray Charles that won Jamie Fox a Best Actor Oscar in 2004. Parks won a Pulitzer Prize for her play Topdog/Underdog.

An earlier version of this play called Ray Charles Live was presented at the Pasadena Playhouse in California in 2007.

The legendary music star died nearly six years ago on June 10, 2004.
