The Hurt Locker takes six BAFTA awards

Kathryn Bigelow’s film wins more awards leading up to Oscar.

The Hurt Locker swept the BAFTA awards yesterday (February 21) in London. It’s the British equivalent to the Oscars. The film is also competing for Best Film at the upcoming Oscars.

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker took home the following awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Sound. Bigelow won the Best Director prize, the first woman to win this honour.

Carey Mulligan won Best Actress for her role in An Education. Colin Firth won Best Actor for his role in A Single Man.

Christopher Waltz won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Inglourious Basterds and Mo’Nique won Best Supporting Actress for her part in Precious.

Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame received the Orange Rising Star award.

The Best Animated Film award went to Disney-Pixar’s Up.

James Cameron’s Avatar won two out of a possible eight awards, Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design.
