Warsaw Commemorates Chopin in 2010

Warsaw will honour its own Frederic Chopin in 2010 with a year of special events.

In 2010, the Polish capital of Warsaw will celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of one of its most celebrated citizens, Frederic Chopin.  To pay homage to the great pianist and composer, the city has organized dozens of  special events, including an 8-language audio guide that visitors can upload, allowing them to retrace the iconic pianist’s steps.

The audio tours will come with a map of the city marking locations linked to Frederic Chopin. The Warsaw Tourism Office has already provided information on a special Internet site. Also included on this site are concert details as well as information on the many exhibits and events devoted to the composer.

Chopin spent the first 20 years of his life in Warsaw before leaving the city during the Polish insurrection of 1830 against the Russians. In 1831, the Russians gained power over Poland. The musician left the country, never to return. He died at age 39 and was buried in Paris, but left behind a priceless musical legacy for the world to cherish.
