Nutcracker Marching Onto the Big Screen

The infamous Nutcracker will once again hit the big screen.

The most famous wooden soldier has captured the attention of the wizard of "motion capture 3D" technology, Robert Zemeckis (Polar Express, Beowulf).

With his latest film, A Christmas Carol, freshly out in theatres, the director has his sights set on another Christmas classic.

According to SlashFilm, Zemeckis wants to make a film on the Nutcracker that will stay true to E.T.A. Hoffman’s original story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. It will tell the tale of how the Russian doll came about in the 19th century during a war between dolls and mice.

The director plans to begin production this summer. The Nutcracker has become the object of several projects over the years, including films, televised films, and the unforgettable Tchaikovsky ballet.

A Christmas Carol has been a sensation since its release on November 6. During its first week in theatres, the film earned more than 30 million dollars in the U.S. and nearly 45 million dollars worldwide.
