Chantal Kreviazuk Leads a Double Life

Chantal Kreviazuk drew inspiration from her role as a mother.

The Canadian singer, who released her Plain Jane album on October 13, admits that the double life she leads as a mother and an artist had a strong influence on her latest disc.

Kreviazuk married Raine Maida, the frontman for Our Lady Peace, in 1999 after they met at a Pearl Jam concert in 1996. That was the year when the grunge band released their debut album, Under These Rocks and Stones.

The couple now have three children, all boys, who were raised in two homes, one in Toronto and one in Los Angeles. The singer admits that they were able to make it work.

"I live in two cities," she says. "In one city, I can go out and I’m Chantal the singer, in the other city, I’m ‘Chantal who?’ and I’m a mom. And now I realize this duplicity is what made me somebody I actually like."

Kreviazuk also revealed that her dual roles have made her priorities clearer. "I actually find that, in some way, having children renewed or replenished my hunger as an artist. It’s making me dig deep. Because now, it’s become very clear to me that is what I am. There’s no fighting it. I can’t over-think anything. I can’t get paranoid. I can’t be insecure. I have to pull it out. And it has to be great."

The 35-year-old singer from Winnipeg has been touring Canada since November 6. She performs tonight in her home town after starting the tour in Vancouver.
