Denzel Washington on Broadway

Denzel Washington will be back on a Broadway stage soon.

The actor will be making his return to live theatre this spring.  FemaleFirst reports that the star will be playing in Fences by August Wilson.

The production was first presented in 1987, with James Earl Jones in the role of patriarch Troy Maxon.  Mary Alice played his wife, and Courtney B. Vance played their son.

Fences earned both a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize for theatre.  The new production is being brought to the stage by Kenny Leon, who also directed Wilson’s other plays, Radio Golf and Gem of the Ocean.  Both of these plays also ran on Broadway.

The last time Denzel Washington took a Broadway stage was in the 2005 production of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.

Washington just finished shooting the film Unstoppable in Pennsylvania with Chris Pine.  The film is headed to theatres on November 12, 2010.  We can also see the star in The Book of Eli along with Mila Kunis and Gary Oldman.  The film opens in theatres on January 15.
