Patrick Dempsey’s Hospital Fundraiser

Patrick Dempsey participated in a race to help raise funds for the hospital that treated his mother’s cancer.

Dempsey didn’t hesitate to return to his home state of Maine over the weekend to participate in a sports challenge to raise funds for the Central Maine Medical Center, the hospital where he was born and where his mother received treatment for cancer, reports FemaleFirst.

The actor, who established the hospital’s Center for Cancer Hope and Healing, organized the event, which entailed a 5-km race and 80-km bike rally. 3 500 athletes took part in the race, raising a total of one million dollars.

The Grey’s Anatomy star was delighted by the event’s success and wants to continue doing his part. "I learned a lot during my mother’s illness. I found out how important it is to have access to good, reliable resources to help the patient, family members and caretakers (and) I knew I that I wanted to make a difference," he said.
