The “Toyobaru”

The highly-awaited car developed by Toyota and Subaru will officially be presented in Tokyo.

Introduced as the Toyota FT-86 Concept, sports car enthusiasts have given the car the nickname "Toyobaru."

Though the concept was in danger of being dropped completely, it was saved by Toyota’s CEO, Akio Toyoda, who has a passion for sports cars.

Taking after the models AE86 and the Celica, the FT-86 is a small, 4.16m-long coupe. Don’t count on seeing an all-wheel drive transmission or hybrid system on this one. However, the FT-86 is given the original Subaru 2.0-litre 4 cylinder, sending 150 horsepower to the rear wheels.

We can expect that to be bumped up for Toyota and Subaru’s 2011 model, since we saw the same block receive 197 hp in the Impreza concept.

The FT-86 will be available in Japan at the end of the month, and can be tested out in Gran Turismo 5, when the game is released between the end of the year and March 2010.
