Dietary Fiber May Help Postmenopausal Women

Dietary fiber may help postmenopausal women control their appetite.

A study was conducted by the University of Montreal on the effects of fiber on postmenopausal women.

According to preliminary results, consumption of dietary fiber helps obese or overweight postmenopausal women control their appetite. However, researchers emphasize that this is not a remedy for treating excess weight.

Increased fiber intake was shown to decrease the hormone that stimulates appetite, ghreline, by 25%. In postmenopausal women who ate more fiber, hormone levels remained low for a very long time and delayed the sensation of hunger.

The study was conducted on 35 women, aged between 46 and 68 years old, who were obese or were overweight but did not have diabetes.
