The Return of the Camaro

After several years in the making, the Camaro has made a comeback with stylistic qualities reminiscent of the 70s, which has become more of a trend in the auto industry, with fond memories dating back to the glory days in the American automobiles. The Camaro is basking in the spotlight shone down by GM, who has succeeded in producing a car that reflects all facets of the concept.

At first glance, the overall look of the Camaro exhibits several elements of its original ancestor. Among them is its large grille that lies under the curved hood, which makes room for the powertrain. Its rear, which is slightly bulging at the sides, also highlights characteristics of the classic muscle car.

Designers also set the tone for the Camaro’s interior. The control panel is outlined by two vertical rectangles that house the odometer and tachometer. Another interesting aspect is a quadrant of squared indicators located on the base of the central console. If you take it for a night spin, you will see that ambient lighting above the aluminum detailing adorns the doors. These elements continue throughout the upper dashboard. The seats are comfortable, but beware of being cramped in the rear seats.

In terms of mechanics, the Camaro will come with two types of engines. The first is a 3.6-litre V6 that would provide a total output of 304 horsepower. The motor can be coupled with a six-speed manual transmission or an automatic, which is also a 6-speed for the LS and LT versions. The more muscular version, the SS, gets a big 6.2-litre V8 that delivers 426 horsepower and a roar that is candy for the ears. This version is also built with either manual or automatic transmission.

The V6’s performance is quite satisfying, providing the driver with spectacular style while enjoying decent fuel economy, all for a reasonable price. For fans of high performance cars, the SS makes great time as far as acceleration goes. Things start to get serious after hitting the first curve. The rear end lets loose, which cues the driver to take control. After pulling a few tricks in the Camaro, it will become clear why these types of cars once ruled the roads.

The new generation of Camaros completes the trio of legendary cars for the nostalgic delight of enthusiasts. For now, the Z28 version has been shelved. But should demand increase, expect to see GM reconsider its decision, especially if the economic situation takes a turn for the better and GM balance sheets permit. Happy driving!
