Mitsubishi Set to Electrify Tokyo

Mitsubishi will be presenting two electric and hybrid concept cars in Tokyo.

Mitsubishi will introduce the PX-MiEV concept.  The SUV is shorter and wider than the Outlander, and sets an innovative path for hybridization.

The car will feature a 1.6-litre gas engine paired with two electric motors, one for the rear wheels and one for the front.  The real innovation here is that the vehicle can use 3 different modes: all-electric, series hybrid (with the gasoline engine recharging the battery), or traditional hybrid, in which the electric motors boost the gasoline engine’s power.

The car will also feature a plug-in recharging system to get back on the road as fast as possible.

The second concept from Mitsubishi is an evolution of the iMiEV called Cargo.

Already on sale in Japan, the iMiEV is an entirely electric vehicle that is currently used for commercial clients.  Now, it seems that the concept could become the first electric family car.

Mitsubishi is only calling the Cargo an exhibition car for now, and has not revealed much information on the technical side.  However, the concept may soon take to the road.  More details are expected to be available at the Tokyo Auto Show.
