McConaughey and Mendes are in talks to join the drama Southbound, reports Variety.
The actor would play a California border patrol agent on duty at the Mexican border. He puts his family in danger when he accepts a bribe from a Mexican beauty. This ignites a battle between criminalized Mexican families and US immigration law enforcement.
Production will begin in September with Jonathan Jakubowicz as the director.
Meanwhile, McConaughey will be filming the action drama flick Hammer Down. As for Eva Mendes, she will be starring alongside Nicolas Cage in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, which does not yet have an American opening date.
