Madonna Wins Mercy

The Malawi Supreme Court has given Madonna a chance to adopt again.

The African country’s Supreme Court overturned its previous decision, and has authorised the American singer to adopt a second child from Malawi.

Madonna filed to appeal a court decision, which prohibited her from adopting Mercy James, a little girl also known as Chifundo James.

According to the court, the initial decision was based upon an interpretation of an old law, requiring the adoptive parents to live in the country for at least 18 months, which no longer suits the demands of modern life. The panel of judges agreed that today, it is now possible to be a resident of several places at the same time.

The court stated, "In our view, Chifundo James is better taken care of by being adopted by foreign parents who will give her love and affection."

Mercy James will be joining another Malawian child adopted by Madonna in 2006, David Banda. The singer, who separated from husband Guy Ritchie last year, is also the mother to two biological children, Lourdes and Rocco.

Children’s advocacy groups oppose Madonna’s adoption, claiming that she is using her stardom to bend the rules in her favour.
