Bazooka Joe on the Big Screen

The famous Bazooka Joe will soon have his own film.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Michael Eisner and his company, Tornante Co., hired Mark Hammer to write the screenplay for the film based on Bazooka Joe.

Bazooka Joe is the central character of the Bazooka chewing gum comic strip. The company had been using him as a marketing tool since the 50s.

The cartoons follow the misadventures of Bazooka Joe, who wears a patch over his eye. It also includes several other characters like Mort, who always is pictured with a turtleneck sweater pulled up over his mouth. There was also Petsy, Toughie, Hungry Herman, Jane and the dog Walkie Talkie.

Bazooka was previously owned by the Topps Company, but was acquired by Michael Eisner in 2007 at a cost of 380 million dollars. Eisner’s mission is to rejuvenate the character.
