Sunshine Recommended for the Elderly

It is strongly recommended that seniors spend more time in the sun.

Researchers at England’s Warwick Medical School and the Institute of Biological Sciences, Shanghai have arrived at the same conclusion: sunshine is beneficial to the elderly.

When aging, there is often a lack of vitamin D, mainly due to physical inactivity, normal aging and a diet low in natural vitamin D.

This deficiency causes a dysfunction, which increases the risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Additionally, the depletion leads to a softening of the bones and weakening of the muscles.

The sun allows for optimal vitamin D absorption through the skin. However, as the skin changes during aging, the vitamin is absorbed less easily, hence aging people require longer sunshine exposure.

The results from this study were published in Diabetes Care.
