Last night in the NHL, there were only three games.
The Panthers were visiting Pittsburgh, the Sharks were in Winnipeg and the Wild took on the Coyotes.
Here are the results and highlights:
The @FlaPanthers extended their road win streak to nine games and tied the Oilers for the second longest this season (9-0-0 from Dec. 21 – Jan. 20) behind only the Kings’ 11-game stretch from Oct. 17 to Dec. 7.#NHLStats: https://t.co/dwPGLVZNsS pic.twitter.com/5CNe60h0jS

1. Penguins lose Jake Guentzel in defeat
Things are really bad in Pittsburgh. It’s so bad that at the next trade deadline, the Penguins are likely to sell. And yet, they acquired Erik Karlsson at the start of the season…
In fact, the Swede is on track to miss the playoffs for the fifth year in a row…
Will be the 5th straight season with no playoffs for EK65.
That sucks.

One player who could/should leave at the deadline is Jake Guentzel.
The veteran, who will become a free agent at the end of the season, scored yesterday, but he was also injured.
He didn’t play the last 12 minutes of a game that was a foregone conclusion.
He is being evaluated for an upper-body injury.
Jake Guentzel did not play the final 11:58 of Pittsburgh’s 5-2 loss to Florida. Head coach Mike Sullivan says the forward is being evaluated for an upper-body injury.

Let’s hope it’s not too serious. Maybe the Pens want to send him elsewhere…
In the Panthers’ 5-2 win, Matthew Tkachuk collected three points.
After an ordinary start to the season, he has 35 points in his last 21 games.
35 points in his last 21 games… Matthew Tkachuk(@TKACHUKycheese_) is cooking. 🧑🍳

2. Logan Cooley scores a beautiful goal
In the Wild-Coyotes game, Minnesota won 3-1.
Arizona’s lone goal was scored by Logan Cooley. A beautiful one, too.

Now the Habs must be regretting their choice…

Note my sarcasm here…
For the Wild, it was Joel Eriksson Ek who broke the ice. He scored on the power play and finished the game with two points.

Kirill Kaprizov also had a good game.
He became the fourth player in Wild history to record four 50-point seasons.

3. Connor Hellebuyck and Mark Scheifele blank the Jets
Prior to their win over the Penguins, things weren’t going too well for the Winnipeg Jets. They had lost five consecutive games, yet had added Sean Monahan to their roster during that stretch.
Yesterday, Winnipeg had the opportunity to play one of the NHL’s worst teams, the Sharks.
Rick Bowness’s club won, but it wasn’t easy. 1-0 victory.
Whitewash of 17 saves for Connor Hellebuyck and one for Mark Schiefele.

Justin Barron’s brother Morgan scored the only goal for the home team.
Neal Pionk picked up an assist, his 137th with the Jets. He’s moving up the franchise ladder in this regard.
Neal Pionk recorded his 137th career assist on Morgan Barron’s goal and tied Jacob Trouba for the fourth most by an @NHLJets / Thrashers defenseman.#NHLStats: https://t.co/z4pZzu3G9P https://t.co/4W3V4jPXIs
