Iggy Pop’s Jazz Album

Singer Iggy Pop was inspired by writer Michel Houellebecq to make a jazz album.

The Stooges frontman was in Paris yesterday to announce the release of a new album, Préliminaires, inspired by jazz and the French book, La possibilité d’une île by Michel Houellebecq.

The album was not in Pop’s original plans, since he was only supposed to write the music for a documentary about the writer. However when reading the book, he found that he related to the character Daniel, and opted to record something more personal.

"It might be because I’m interested in sex, death and the end of the human race. Like Daniel, the book’s protagonist, I too have grown weary of a career as an entertainer and I wish for a new life," said the singer.

The album, which also includes a remake of the song Les feuilles mortes, sung in French, is set for a release on May 18.
