The Smurfs Hit the Big Screen

The famous little blue guys, the Smurfs, are coming to theatres.

Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation are currently working on the 3-D animated film, The Smurfs.

Sony has acquired the rights to make the film, starring the famous miniature blue dudes. Jordan Kerner (Charlotte’s Web) will be the producer, while David Stern and David Weiss, the writers of the second Shrek, are in talks about writing the Smurfs screenplay.

Created in 1958 by Belgian animator, Pierre Culliford, The Smurfs was originally intended to be a comic book series. After gaining popularity, the men in blue were brought to television and carved their place in history.

The film is expected to be released in 2009.
