The Oscar winner died Saturday evening (April 5), at his home in Beverly Hills, reported People. His wife of 64 years, Lydia, was by his side.
A spokesperson for the Heston family stated, "Charlton had made an announcement of his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2002 and had very much retired from public life. He had been at home most of the past years."
The family thanked the fans, friends and colleagues of the late star. Heston won an Oscar for Best Actor in 1959 for his performance in Ben-Hur. He also played Moses in The Ten Commandments in 1956.
